Today in History: On November 9, 1969, fourteen American Indians from 20 tribes occupied Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. They offered to buy the island from the federal government for $24. By November 20, 79 American Indians were on the island, including students, married couples, and six children. The occupation would last for well over a year with the last 15 people being removed by federal troops on June 11, 1971.
