Today in History: On November 9, 1969, fourteen American Indians from 20 tribes occupied Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. They offered to buy the island from the federal government for $24. By November 20, 79 American Indians were on the island, including students, married couples, and six children. The occupation would last for well over a year with the last 15 people being removed by federal troops on June 11, 1971. The above photograph was was snapped of the remaining Indians on June 11, the day of their removal, by Ilka Hartmann
